This is the second time that Topps made a tall boys set. The tall boy cards are very distinct and difficult to obtain in great condition.
The main difference between this set and the 1969 tall boys set (besides the rookies) is that these cards have more vibrant colors. The background of these cards appear in blue, green, red, yellow, and orange.
The back of the card is horizontal. It shows his vitals, stats, and has a description. This card also has a fun fact with a picture drawn. For example, the Pete Maravich card states that his dad was his coach at LSU.
Notable Cards
Pete Maravich #123
This is considered to be “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s rookie card. He was one of college’s most prolific scorers (even without a 3 point line!).
Pistol Pete was ahead of his time in terms of how he played the game. He threw ridiculously amazing passes and is regarded as one of ten best ball handlers of all-time. Maravich averaged 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists in his entire career.
Despite not winning an NBA championship, he was a 4x NBA all-star, scoring champ, and one of the top 75 basketball players of all-time.
Lew Alcindor #75
Alcindor was one of the most dominant centers of all- time. This card is considered his second year card and he is shown wearing a green shirt.
Lew Alcindor is also known as Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He is renowned for his famous skyhook which was nearly impossible to block.
Set Information
This set contains two series. The first contains the first 110 cards and 22 of which are short-prints. The second series includes cards 111-175.
One interesting part of this set is that there are specific insert cards. The first 6 cards have the leaders of a specific stat (top 3 players). Additionally, cards 106-115 show all-star teams . Finally, the last 8 cards show the Lakers versus the Knicks in the NBA Championship
