Featuring a new layout and some noteworthy novice card alternatives, 1955 Topps Baseball has aged well.
Full of popular players like Willie Mays and Hank Aaron along with legendary rookies such as Clemente and Koufax.
The 1955 Topps Baseball release includes 206 cards, making it the second-smallest Topps baseball card set ever produced behind 1951 Topps.
As held true with the 1954 Topps set, Bowman’s special agreements with Mickey Mantle and Roy Campanella avoided their look in the 1955 release as well.
Among the stars who had no ’55 Topps card were Stan Musial, Whitey Ford and Bob Feller.
A few other players Bowman signed were:
Thankfully enough, there are still a lot of big names in 1955 Topps Baseball, consisting of Hank Aaron, Duke Snider, Yogi Berra, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson and Eddie Mathews.
The players later on were revealed to be Stan Musial (# 175), Whitey Ford (# 186), Bob Feller (# 203) and Herb Rating (# 209).
Harmon Killebrew
Harmon Killebrew was a great player for Minnesota
He hit 573 home runs across his career and ended up in the baseball HOF.
Sandy Koufax
One of the greatest pitchers of all time
While Koufax’s career was brief, he won multiple Cy Youngs and crushed his competitors while being on the dodgers.
Roberto Clemente
Clemente was known for his charity work helping Latin American countries.
3000 hits & a lifetime .317 batting average.
He died young in a plane crash giving aid in Nicaragua
There was a special vote the following year, in which Clemente ended up getting selected for the HOF.
Duke Snider
It may be a surprise that Duke Snider would surpass guys like Ted Williams, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays on this list. However, you should remember that baseball card values can depend upon a number of peculiarities and elements. In this case, Snider’s card was the last one printed in the set.
Remember, kids utilized to stack these cards and secure them with rubber bands. And typically, they did so sequentially. So Snider’s card frequently found its location at the bottom of the stack and would be far more prone to use and tear from the elastic band. Contribute to this fact that Snider himself is a famous Hall of Famer and that 1955 was a significant year for the Dodgers.
Harry Agannis
Agganis had offers for both Baseball and Football.
While his base card isn’t too expensive, his signed rookie cards are.
They are super scarce since he passed away shortly after the cards were produced.
Anyone who collects signed autos of rookies or the 55 set needs this super rare card to complete their collection.
2nd Year Cards
The set has three 2nd year cards worth grabbing.
Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, and Al Kaline were all rookies in the 1954 topps set.
Other Cards
The set is loaded with hall of farmers. Some of the other notable ones are:
Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews, Yogi Berra
